The Cal Aggie Criterium, a season-opening race held in Sacramento, was attended by Team Mike's Bikes members Adam Switters, Brandon Trafton, Travis Lyons, James LaBerge, and fresh off the classroom desk, Eric Riggs. It was our first 2014 race together and we felt pressure to win based on a successful 2013 season. Marc Pro-Strava had five riders in the race, and like most NorCal racers looked strong after another mild fall and winter. There will be toughcompetition this year!
Cal Aggie started very fast, with TMB making early attacks and winning a prime. Fifteen minutes into the race, a split of eight were in a possible race-winning move. There were two TMB, two MPS, and four others. A lap later many more bridged including TMB. James LaBerge, sensing this was a crucial group to be in, attacked strategically on the course and was able to bridge solo. After this move, the entire TMB squad was in the front group, making it a very ideal five TMB out of a group of fifteen!
For half the race, this group stayed away, especially with MPS riders working the front. However, with so many riders in the group there was no organization and with three laps left in the race the field catches them. This changed the race once again!
There was a large crash just after two laps to go. Unfortunately Travis Lyons was involved and fractured his clavicle. Despite this setback, TMB kept cool and near the front. Other teams were working until TMB hit it on the backside of the course on the last lap. With 700 meters go, MPS started moving up on the right side of the course. BOOM! Another crash takes out many riders in the last corner. Brandon and James, ahead of the crash continue on at full speed. JamesLaBerge wins!
